About Communication!

Our 日本語のクラス is making videos in small groups that show our understanding of Japanese and send any message that we find important. I am excited to learn more about working with a group of other people on a creative project, and the process by which ideas are shared. I have also learned how to communicate the things that I value to the group.

I think communication is important because it brings people together, no matter what part of the world they may be from. When two people don't know the same language, there is often said to be a "language barrier" between them. Communication is able to remove the barrier, and allow the people to understand each other and feel more connected to the rest of the world. When people communicate with each other, they feel a sense of togetherness and they are reminded how similar every person is no matter what country they are from.

Translations for Senryu

I thought I would translate my senryu, to make things more clear--especially because I was unsure if I used correct words, or words that even exist.

I heard
the song flew
the voice of a person.

A high mountain
so much work
busy.

Happy
a meal with my family
Ah, my younger sisters!

カタカナ Literary Work!

Here are my three senryu written about different subjects. I really enjoyed writing these, although I had to try a few different versions as I learned what consisted of one mora.

I used katakana as opposed to hiragana for some words in the haiku to place special emphasis on those words. I didn't use any foreign or loan words, or that usage of katakana. In the last senryu I used katakana for an exclamatory word or onomatopoeia, "ah." The first senryu has the words "flies" and "voice" in katakana, just because I wanted to place special emphasis on them. The second one has the word "high" in katakana, also because I wanted to emphasize the insurmountability of the mountain. I enjoyed writing these senryu! I hope you enjoy reading them.

カタカナ Project!

I think that the fourth textbook entry (The one called "The Japanese Writing System 2) has the most helpful description of カタカナ。It has an entire section devoted only to the Katakana alphabet, while the other textbooks describe all the scripts in one section. Even though it doesn't show the difference in how the different alphabets look or are written, it has the most thorough definition of Katakana. It is the only book that explains in more detail the multiple uses of Katakana-- especially the ones that are harder to define, like when an advertisement is trying to "give an impression of sophistication and modernity."


The example of Katakana which I am analyzing was found in a Japanese magazine that I bought, that is a flashy directory or guide of different attractions in Tokyo.
The Katakana reads ショッピングタウンノ!  (Shoppingu taunno = Shopping town)

There is probably a way to say this using words of Japanese origin, but the Katakana uses English words instead. This contributes to the idea that because Japan closed itself off for so long, western words or ideas seem new, fresh, and exciting. While this Katakana does spell out foreign words, it does not exactly fall into that category of usage-- the words are not Japanese words of a foreign origin, but they are English words spelled out in Katakana. This ad uses Katakana to catch the reader's eye by appearing more exciting.

The use of Katakana for advertisements or eye-catching phrases is understandable from an aesthetic standpoint. The hard angles of the characters convey more energy and excitement than the soft, round curves of Hiragana.

A letter to an imaginary host family, the Yamada family!!! One day I hope to get to stay with a real host family in Japan.

こんいちは。エマ・ピーターソン です。わたしのせいかつわあまりひまじゃありませんが、わたしはげんきです。やまださんのせいかつはどうですか。 ニューヨークはとてもさむいです。まちはとてもにぎやかです。そしてたのしいです。へやはとてもちいさいですが、わるくないです。ともだちはしんせつなひとです。おんがくがすきです。にほんへしちがつじゅうよっかにいきます。よろしくおねがいします!!

せんしゅうのどようびとにちようび

こんいちは みなさん! せんしゅうのどようびにともだちと あるいてfencing room へいきました。 じゅうじからじゅにじまで ともだちにfencing しました。
This is how I fence... in my dreams.
This just seems so much less exciting.
せんしゅうのにちようびにともだちとひるごはんをたべました。おいしい!!!わたしたちあるいてともだちのうちへきました。ともだちのおかあさんはわたしにいちごをあげました。ジュースとぎゅうにゅうをのみました。

にほんごをべんきょうします!

こんにちは everyone, and to my fellow にほんご students! I am really enjoying studying Japanese so far.  It can be pretty difficult sometimes, though.  For some reason the numbers are impossible for me to remember, no matter how many flashcards I make... I seem to have tackled ひらがな though, just in time to learn カタカナ! But if I'm being perfectly honest, the hardest thing about Japanese class so far has been waking up for a nine o'clock class every day.  I'm not a morning person, to say the least. But neither is my room mate, so we help each other out the best we can.   まいあさわたしははちじにじゅうごふんにおきます。 That took me a little too long, but I'll keep practicing!
